Patna, 20 July: Bihar Police on Sunday said it has arrested gangster Tauseef alias Badshah — the prime accused in the sensational murder of Chandan Mishra — along with three of his associates from Kolkata.

The arrests were made during a joint operation by Bihar and West Bengal police on Saturday evening, following a detailed analysis of electronic and scientific evidence. The four accused were traced to a guest house in Kolkata’s Anandapur area, where they were hiding.

“All four have been arrested under sections related to murder and the Arms Act,” said Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K Sharma. “They will be produced before a court here, and we will seek their remand for custodial interrogation.”

Tauseef was already wanted in connection with an Arms Act case. According to investigators, a conspiracy to eliminate Chandan Mishra was hatched at the residence of one of Tauseef’s aides in Patna’s Samanpura locality.

SSP Sharma said the investigation team used CCTV footage, mobile tower location data, and call detail records to locate the suspects.
“We coordinated with the Kolkata Police and their Special Task Force (STF), who fully supported the operation and helped apprehend the accused,” he said.

The case pertains to the July 17 killing of Chandan Mishra — a murder convict out on parole — inside a private hospital in Patna. Armed assailants stormed the ICU and opened fire at Mishra, who was undergoing treatment. CCTV footage of the incident later went viral on social media, showing five gunmen carrying out the targeted hit in broad daylight.

Chandan, a native of Buxar district, was an alleged gangster linked to 24 criminal cases, including over a dozen murders. He had been lodged at Beur Jail in Patna and had gone to the hospital under parole protection.

As part of the investigation, Bihar Police also questioned the sister of one of Tauseef’s accomplices in Patna to gather leads on the accused’s movements.

West Bengal Police had initially said five persons, including a woman, were picked up from the New Town area near Kolkata, though only four have been officially confirmed as involved in the murder case so far.

Police say all accused have been identified and more arrests may follow.
