Jalandhar, Sept 14 — Richi Kaypee, 36, son of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee, died late Saturday after his vehicle was struck in a multi-car collision caused by what witnesses described as a “speeding” Hyundai Creta near Mata Rani Chowk in Jalandhar’s upscale Model Town.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred between 11 and 11:30 p.m. when the Creta, reportedly out of control, rammed into three vehicles in quick succession — a taxi, a Grand Vitara, and finally Kaypee’s Fortuner. The force of the crash pushed vehicles into a nearby store railing, damaging its steps and iron grills. Airbags deployed in the vehicles, but the impact left Kaypee’s Fortuner badly mangled, with the bonnet and side panels smashed.

Kaypee, who was behind the wheel, sustained severe injuries. He was rushed first to one private hospital and later shifted to another during the night, but doctors declared him brought dead. Police officials said preliminary information indicated that Richi had gone out briefly to return a mobile phone to a friend when the accident occurred. His family home is located not far from the site of the collision.

The Creta’s driver, who was traveling with his wife and daughter, allegedly fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police confirmed that both women in the SUV were also injured. “We have been informed that one person has died in the accident. The Creta was being driven by a man whose wife and daughter were also hurt. The investigation is under way, and CCTV footage from shops in the area will be reviewed once stores reopen. An FIR will be registered after initial findings,” said the SHO of Police Station Number 6.

Eyewitnesses claimed the Creta driver was at high speed when the vehicle spun out of control before striking the other cars. After the collision, chaos prevailed at the busy chowk, with smashed vehicles scattered and locals rushing to help the injured.

Richi Kaypee is survived by his father, mother, and two sisters. His father, Mohinder Singh Kaypee, served two terms as a Member of Parliament and remains a senior figure in Punjab’s political circles.
