EDMONTON, Oct 30 — A 55-year-old Indian-origin businessman, Arvi Singh Sagoo, died after being assaulted by a stranger in downtown Edmonton, Canada, police said. The incident unfolded on October 19 after Sagoo confronted a man he saw urinating on his car near a restaurant on 109 Street.

According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Sagoo and his girlfriend were returning to their vehicle after dining at The Common when they spotted the suspect. When Sagoo questioned the man’s behavior, the individual allegedly struck him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

Sagoo was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and was placed on life support. He succumbed to his injuries five days later, on October 24.

Police identified and arrested 40-year-old Kyle Papin, who was initially charged with aggravated assault. Following Sagoo’s death, the case has been transferred to the EPS Homicide Unit, and investigators said additional charges are expected.

Authorities confirmed that Sagoo and the suspect were strangers and had no prior connection. “This appears to be a tragic and senseless act of violence,” an EPS spokesperson said.

Papin remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on November 4.

Sagoo, remembered by friends and community members as a well-known businessman, had lived in Edmonton for years. The Indian community in Alberta expressed shock and grief over the incident, calling it a “heartbreaking loss” for the city’s South Asian diaspora.
