Yamunanagar, November 6: Six college girls were injured, two of them critically, after they fell from an overcrowded Haryana Roadways bus and were run over by its rear wheels at the Pratap Nagar bus stand in Yamunanagar on Thursday morning, police said.

The incident took place around 8 a.m. when the bus, travelling from Paonta Sahib to New Delhi, arrived late at the stand, which was packed with students waiting to leave for schools and colleges.

Witnesses said the rush to board began before the bus came to a halt. “Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated, and six of us lost balance and fell. Before we realised it, the rear wheels ran over us,” said Archita, a BTech student from GMIT College who fractured her right leg.

Police identified the injured as Archita from Pratap Nagar, Aarti from Kutipur, Muskan from Tibbi, Sanjana from Bahadurpur, and Anjali and Amandeep from Pratap Nagar. Two of them — Aarti and another student — were reported to be in critical condition.

The students were first taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Pratap Nagar, but due to lack of facilities, they were referred to the Yamunanagar Civil Hospital. “We had to rush our daughters in private cars because no ambulance was available,” said Gopal Krishan, father of one of the injured girls.

Police said the driver, Anil Kumar, and conductor, Kamal, had been detained for questioning and medical examination. The driver told investigators that the accident occurred because the students tried to board before the bus stopped.

Following the incident, students blocked buses at the Pratap Nagar bus stand, demanding more vehicles on the route. The protest continued for over two hours despite efforts by Station House Officer Nar Singh and Sub-Inspector Kanwarpal to calm the crowd.
