Robotic Surgery Saves Transplant Kidney of 56-Year-Old at Fortis Mohali

Mohali, Nov 14: A 56-year-old man with a tumour in his transplanted kidney has been successfully treated through advanced robotic surgery at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the hospital said on Thursday. The procedure was performed by Dr Dharmender Aggarwal, Consultant, Uro-Oncology and Robotic Surgery, using the fourth-generation Da Vinci Xi robotic system, which the hospital noted has helped treat multiple complex urological cancers.

The patient, who had undergone a renal transplant in 2018 for chronic kidney disease, was found to have a 3-cm tumour in his transplanted kidney during recent evaluations. After he approached Fortis Mohali, Dr Aggarwal conducted a robot-assisted transplant kidney partial nephrectomy, removing only the tumour and preserving the functioning kidney.

Hospital officials said the surgery involved dissecting the renal vessels and removing the growth without damaging the remaining organ. The patient maintained good urine output after the procedure and neither blood transfusion nor dialysis was needed. He began walking within ten hours and was discharged on the third day. “He has recovered fully and is leading a normal life today,” Fortis stated.

Calling the case “complex,” Dr Aggarwal said precise dissection around a transplanted kidney is particularly challenging. “Most of the time, the kidney and surrounding tissues are stuck due to previous surgeries. Any delay in medical intervention would have caused the tumour to grow in size and impact other organs,” he said.

Fortis Mohali said the case showcases  the growing role of robotic surgery in managing high-risk patients with transplanted organs and complicated renal tumours.
