LHC seeks state reply on visa-violation plea against Indian pilgrim

Lahore, December 5 — The Lahore High Court on Friday issued a notice to the state after hearing a petition accusing Indian Sikh pilgrim Sarabjit Kaur of violating her visa conditions during a recent visit to Pakistan.

Justice Farooq Haider, heading the single bench, directed the government to file its response within two weeks. Court advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi said the petition was resubmitted today “after removing earlier objections,” allowing it to be fixed for hearing.

Filed by former Punjab lawmaker Mahendra Pal Singh through Advocate Ali Chengizi Sandhu, the petition argues that Kaur travelled to locations not permitted under her visa and remained in Pakistan after its expiry. “She continued to stay despite a clear deadline and moved beyond designated pilgrimage sites,” the petition states.

According to the plea, Kaur entered Pakistan on November 4 on a 10-day single-entry religious visa restricted to approved sites including Nankana Sahib and Kartarpur. Her permit expired on November 13.

The petition also claims Kaur faces fraud and cheating cases in India, and questions how she was granted a visa and cleared at the border “without adequate background checks.”

The federal government, Interior Ministry, FIA, Punjab government, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the Punjab Minority Affairs Department have been named respondents.
