SMITA Weightlifting League 2025-2026 held at CGC Landran

70 female weightlifters participate from the Tricity

Landran, Jan 22: More than 70 athletes from across the Tricity region gathered and participated at Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran for the ASMITA Weightlifting League 2025-2026 with Dr. Rajdeep Singh, Campus Director of CGC Landran stating that the League provides an important platform for young talented women.

The competition, held under the Khelo India program with support from the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Weightlifting Federation, featured participants from various universities, colleges, and independent clubs. Athletes competed across eight different weight categories in the Youth, Junior, and Senior divisions.

The event expected to foster an inclusive sports environment and provide a professional pathway for female lifters at the grassroots level.

Senior national champion Harmanpreet Kaur, recognized as Punjab’s top female weightlifter for the current and previous seasons, attended as the chief guest.

She was joined by CGC Landran Vice Chairman Parampal Singh Dhillon and other senior campus administrators.

Dr. Rajdeep Singh, Campus Director of CGC Landran, noted that the institution is dedicated to creating opportunities for women in competitive sports.

He mentioned that the league serves as a vital stage for talent discovery.

“The ASMITA Weightlifting League provides an important platform for young women to showcase their talent and gain confidence through sports,” Dr. Singh directly said.

“Hosting this competition at CGC Landran reflects our commitment to supporting women athletes and strengthening grassroots participation in mainstream competitive sports.”

The host institution’s team delivered a strong performance, securing a total of 11 medals, including six silver and five bronze.

In the Senior 69 kg category, Bhoomiza Vaid took the gold medal, while Arshdeep Kaur and CGC’s Puja Kumari earned silver and bronze, respectively. The Senior 77 kg category saw Shalini claim the top spot, followed by Diksha and Sohani.

In the Junior divisions, Anya Rakwal secured gold in the 77 kg category, while Jaismeen Kaur Sandhu and Navjot Chaudhary won gold in the 86 kg and 86+ kg categories, respectively.

The Youth section saw Kangna and Simran take gold in their respective weight classes. The proceedings were overseen by national and international referees to maintain technical standards.
