New Delhi, March 5: US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has proposed a strengthened energy alliance with India, suggesting that American resources provide a reliable alternative as Middle East tensions threaten global supplies. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi, the diplomat stated that Washington is prepared to support India’s energy security during the ongoing volatility involving Iran.
The proposal comes as the international community monitors potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for India’s crude imports. Mr. Landau asserted that the United States, as a leading global energy producer, stands ready to ensure stable supplies for the Indian market in both the short and long term.
“I hope you are looking for alternate sources… you can’t have a better alternative than the United States,” the Deputy Secretary declared.
Addressing India’s current energy portfolio, including the purchase of discounted Russian oil, Mr. Landau maintained that diversification is essential for regional stability. He noted that the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington is a critical pillar for navigating the “new normal” in global geopolitics.
“We tried very hard to explain our red line — no development of a nuclear weapon,” Mr. Landau affirmed regarding the confrontation with Tehran.
The senior diplomat also stated that negotiations for an India-US trade agreement are nearing completion. He affirmed that this pact would unlock significant economic opportunities and further cement ties between the two nations in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.
