CHANDIGARH, March 24 — The Punjab government is positioned to secure the hosting rights for the Asian Hockey Championship, potentially bringing the prestigious tournament back to the state after a 44-year interval. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is scheduled to provide specific details regarding this development during a press conference in Chandigarh today.
The move follows a series of initiatives aimed at revitalizing the athletic landscape in the state. Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian stated that sports in Punjab are gaining new momentum through increased opportunities for youth and systematic improvements to infrastructure.
“The level of sports is rising as players receive further encouragement through rewards and employment opportunities,” Khuddian maintained.
Furthering the administration’s focus on athlete welfare, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies Lal Chand Kataruchak affirmed that the support of the Mann government, specifically through cash prizes and government jobs, has boosted the morale of the players.
He asserted that the upcoming announcement by the Chief Minister is a vital step in strengthening the local sports environment.
The administration has also linked modern athletic goals with traditional heritage. Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur declared that while native games and the cultural legacy of Kila Raipur have been given new life, the state is now moving toward building modern stadiums in every village and town.
She noted that today’s announcement is intended to take Punjab ahead again in the global sports arena.
