CHANDIGARH, May 20 — The state election machinery moved into its next critical operational phase as 10,809 candidates officially filed their nomination papers for the upcoming civic body elections scheduled for May 26. The high volume of submissions marks the closing of the formal filing window across multiple tiers of local administration.

According to consolidated data released by the State Election Commission, the filings span 105 distinct civic entities, encompassing eight major municipal corporations, 76 municipal councils, and 21 nagar panchayats.

A breakdown of the institutional data indicates that 2,154 contenders submitted documentation for the municipal corporations, while municipal councils drew the highest engagement with 7,334 aspirants. The remaining 1,321 candidates are competing for representation within the state’s nagar panchayats.

“The commission has established comprehensive oversight frameworks to ensure the entire process remains transparent, orderly, and accessible for all valid participants,” an official representative asserted following the compilation of registry data. The desk maintained that field observers have been deployed to verify that code of conduct protocols are sustained uniformly across all regional centers.

With the submission window closed, administrative focus shifts immediately to the scrutiny of papers, followed by the designated window for candidate withdrawals. Electoral authorities affirmed that final polling preparations, including station allocations and security logistics, are proceeding on schedule to ensure seamless voting operations on polling day, with counting and official results slated for declaration on May 29.
