IMD Revises Rain Alert for Chandigarh, Haryana

Weakening Western Disturbance alters weekend precipitation patterns across the region

CHANDIGARH, MAY 29 — The India Meteorological Department on Friday downgraded its precipitation forecast across Haryana and Chandigarh, citing a significant weakening in the current Western Disturbance cycle.

Despite the reduced intensity of the atmospheric system, meteorologists retained predictions for widespread thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across the entire region for both Friday and Saturday. Weather models indicate that the localized system will continue to bring temperature relief, effectively keeping the previous week’s severe heatwave conditions at bay through the weekend.

According to the updated schedule issued by the regional weather observatory, Friday’s rain distribution remains highly variable. Officials predicted a 50 to 75 percent probability of showers across Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Jhajjar, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Gurugram, Faridabad, Nuh, and Palwal. The remaining seven districts of Haryana face a lower 25 to 50 percent chance of scattered rainfall.

“The core pressure of the system has dissipated faster than initially anticipated,” a senior regional meteorologist stated. “While the threat of destructive squalls has minimized, moisture tracking from the west ensures that active electrical storms will still develop across the plains during the evening hours.”

The weather pattern will shift further on Saturday, restricting the highest 50 to 75 percent rainfall probabilities to a smaller pocket including Yamunanagar, Sirsa, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Nuh, and Palwal. Chandigarh, along with major hubs like Gurugram, Faridabad, and Panchkula, will see the probability of precipitation drop to a 25 to 50 percent margin, while the rest of Haryana faces only isolated showers.

By Sunday, the system will largely retreat from the capital, introducing completely dry conditions to Chandigarh. However, a 25 to 50 percent chance of rain will persist across southern and western Haryana districts, including Sonepat, Rohtak, and Gurugram. Long-range indicators confirm that the entire region will experience clear skies and a return of intense summer heat starting Monday morning.
