CHANDIGARH, MAY 30 — A sudden change in atmospheric conditions brought significant relief to the Chandigarh Tricity on Saturday morning, breaking a severe heatwave that had impacted the region since Monday.
The arrival of light to moderate rainfall followed two consecutive days of red alert warnings that produced no visible precipitation. According to regional reports, the skies turned dark around 7:30 a.m., followed by a sharp pick-up in cool winds and the onset of rain across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula by 8 a.m.
“The weather system finally bared its teeth over the Chandigarh Tricity on Saturday morning,” weather officials stated, noting that the precipitation delivered the first tangible drop in temperatures after days of intense summer conditions.
In response to the active storm cell, the India Meteorological Department issued a fresh nowcast warning on Saturday morning. The emergency alert warned of continued severe thunderstorms, rain, localized hailstorms, and gusty winds ranging between 50 and 80 kmph across the urban jurisdictions and adjoining districts.
The weather bureau advised residents to remain inside safe structures and strictly avoid taking temporary shelter under trees during the active storm phase.
