PHAGWARA, MAY 30 — Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths shot and killed Jalandhar-based Right to Information activist Simranjeet Singh outside a prominent university gate in Phagwara on Saturday afternoon.

The fatal assault occurred near the law faculty entrance of Lovely Professional University in Chaheru village. According to law enforcement data, Singh succumbed to close-range firearm wounds at the scene before medical personnel could intervene. Investigators noted that the victim was travelling without personal protection at the time of the targeted attack, despite having previously been allocated two police gunmen by the Jalandhar City police following an earlier attempt on his life.

“The Satnampura Police team in Phagwara received information about the murder following which teams reached the spot,” Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla stated. Singla confirmed that field officers recovered a .32 bore pistol directly from the crime scene, alongside a .12 bore rifle found inside a Fortuner SUV parked adjacent to the university gate.

The activist maintained an extensive legal history spanning more than a decade, regularly submitting public interest petitions and formal complaints to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the state police, and federal enforcement agencies. Operational logs show that Singh had recently submitted sensitive documentation to the Enforcement Directorate regarding sitting Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora, who remains held in judicial custody.

Police personnel noted that Singh, a resident of Adarsh Nagar who had recently remarried following a divorce, survived an armed ambush outside a Jalandhar gym exactly one year ago. Special tactical squads, including counter-intelligence units, have been mobilized across the district to identify the fleeing suspects and establish the exact sequence of events leading to the daytime shooting.
