Dehradun, June 10: Four tourists from the Delhi-National Capital Region died Wednesday when their passenger vehicle veered off the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway and dropped roughly 500 meters into a steep ravine. Initial police assessments indicate that the driver lost control of the compact car after experiencing an unexpected brake failure while navigating a sharp downhill section of the mountainous roadway near the Kolhukhet area.

Regional emergency personnel and local police units immediately mobilized to the accident site to initiate a retrieval operation in the difficult terrain. Law enforcement officials stated that all four passengers sustained fatal injuries from the impact and were declared dead at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle’s brakes may have failed while negotiating a steep downhill stretch, causing the driver to lose control,” a police spokesperson noted during the initial situational briefing.

The local department confirmed that the travelers were descending the mountain pass on their return journey from Uttarkashi inside a Maruti Celerio registered in Delhi. Officials stated that a specialized mechanical inspection will be conducted on the vehicle remains to definitively establish the technical factors that caused the car to leave the pavement.

The state authority identified the deceased individuals as Satyaprakash, a resident of Sonipat; 19-year-old Manit; Savita, 48, from Ghaziabad; and Sangeeta, 46, from Karol Bagh in Delhi. Investigators stated that formal communication has been established with the respective families regarding the processing of the victims.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami publically expressed his condolences regarding the highway tragedy, stating that the sudden loss of tourist lives near Jharipani brought profound sadness to the state. The Chief Minister noted that regional authorities are extending all necessary administrative assistance to the grieving relatives during the post-accident formalities.
