Tricity to get Relief from Intense Heatwave

Severe weather to bring cooling relief across the region

Chandigarh, June 11: A powerful weather system is sweeping across the region, bringing heavy rain and intense thunderstorms to break the grueling heatwave grip over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Regional forecasters have issued warnings for severe weather conditions on June 11 and 12, predicting sudden downpours and fierce winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour.

This shifting weather pattern is driven by an atmospheric system moving through northern India. Surender Paul, Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chandigarh, declared that the rainfall is associated with an active Western Disturbance that will influence the region on June 11 and 12, after which the system is expected to weaken. He maintained that the anticipated rainfall would bring significant relief from the ongoing heatwave affecting the region.

Punjab will see a similar progression of relief. On June 11, rainfall is anticipated at many places across Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, and Patiala, while the rest of the state catches lighter showers. On June 12, the widespread rain will concentrate over Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, SAS Nagar, and Rupnagar, leaving a few places in the remaining districts to experience the tail end of the storm.

The incoming precipitation will vary by locality over the two-day period. According to official meteorological definitions, when forecasters predict rain at “many places,” it means showers will blanket 50 to 75 percent of that specific territory. A prediction of rain at “a few places” indicates a lighter, more scattered coverage spanning 25 to 50 percent of the area.

In Haryana, the initial wet spell on June 11 will heavily target Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kaithal, Karnal, and Kurukshetra, with rainfall expected at many places. The rest of Haryana and Chandigarh will see showers at a few places. By June 12, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar will transition into the high-coverage zone, while the remaining parts of Haryana will experience more scattered rainfall.
