Chandigarh, June 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party will contest the upcoming Punjab assembly elections independently across all 117 seats, completely ruling out any possibility of a political coalition with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon dismissed ongoing alliance talks as mere rumors, stating that no discussions have occurred at any level within the party. He declared that the central leadership has not initiated any consultations with the state unit regarding a joint front. According to Dhillon, the political landscape will shift drastically once the model code of conduct takes effect, paving the way for the party to form the next government on its own.
Opposing leaders have already begun reacting to the speculative alliance. Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal commented heavily on the potential partnership, while Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann termed it a desperate attempt by both parties to regain their lost political footing. Even former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh expressed skepticism, maintaining that the saffron party cannot secure a majority in Punjab without support.
In response to these criticisms, Dhillon asserted that Kejriwal is reacting out of panic as his political support erodes. He noted that the AAP leadership is attempting to use divisive tactics, though the historical bond between the Hindu and Sikh communities remains unbreakable.
The state president also addressed recent enforcement actions, stating that Arvind Kejriwal tried to misrepresent the context of the recent Enforcement Directorate raids. He affirmed that accountability will be enforced strictly against wrongdoers regardless of their background, while ensuring that no innocent citizens face harassment.
Security and governance remain central to the party’s platform moving forward. During a recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Dhillon stated that the home minister expressed deep concern over the prevailing law and order situation and the rising drug menace in Punjab.
To kickstart the election machinery, the party has scheduled high-profile visits from central leaders. Union Ministers are slated to begin touring the state on June 13, followed by a three-day visit by BJP National President Nitin Nabin from June 20 to June 22 to formally launch the campaign.
