New Delhi, 7 January 2025: The Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday that voting for Delhi’s 70 Assembly seats will take place on February 5, 2025, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressed concerns surrounding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the announcement, reiterating their security and reliability. “EVMs cannot be tampered with,” Kumar assured while reflecting on the conclusion of his tenure as Chief Election Commissioner.

Kumar acknowledged issues raised by political parties about alleged irregularities in the voter rolls, including wrongful additions and deletions. “Names cannot be removed without a personal hearing. A draft roll is published at every polling station, and deletions exceeding two percent undergo scrutiny by the ARO and RO,” he clarified.

He further detailed EVM protocols, explaining that new batteries are installed before elections, sealed, and later unsealed in front of polling agents on election day. Mock polls are conducted to verify functionality, and polling agents maintain detailed records of the voting process.

With political tensions building, the election dates mark the start of another crucial contest in the national capital.
