Chandigarh, 25 February 2025 — Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kulwant Singh raised concerns over the prolonged delay in shifting Mohali’s motor market, alleging that the Punjab government and GMADA suffered losses worth crores due to inaction.
Speaking in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on the second day of the session, Singh said a draw was conducted in 2019 to allot booths to around 500 motor mechanics, and a new market was built in Kambali in 2022 to relocate the existing Phase-7 market. However, despite 300 allotments and partial payments by some allottees, the project remains stalled.
He pointed out that while the market has been ready for three years, the RERA number was applied for only in January 2025, leading to the deterioration of infrastructure. “The site has turned into a forest, with roads, water supply, and sewerage systems ruined,” Singh said, questioning the delay and demanding accountability for the estimated ₹60-70 crore financial loss.
In response, Housing and Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian stated that GMADA had completed the booth allotment process and applied for RERA registration in January.
“Once the project is registered, allotment letters will be issued,” he said, attributing the delay to applicants rather than the government or GMADA.
