Chamoli, Feb 28 – An avalanche struck the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Friday, trapping 57 labourers engaged in road construction, officials said.

Sixteen workers have been rescued so far, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed. “Efforts are underway to locate and rescue the remaining trapped workers,” he added.

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari stated that the avalanche buried the BRO camp between Mana and Badrinath. Mana, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters, is the last village on the India-Tibet border.

IG Nilesh Anand Bharne told ANI that 10 of the rescued workers were in critical condition and had been moved to an army camp near Mana.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been dispatched to the site despite heavy snowfall and rain. Rescue operations are ongoing.
