New Delhi/ Agartala, 3 December 24: Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma following a security breach at its Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura. The incident, which unfolded in Tripura’s capital near the Bangladesh border, involved a large protest against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and alleged attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Protesters reportedly stormed the Bangladeshi mission in Agartala, vandalizing property and causing significant disruption. Reacting to the breach, India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and assured that security at all Bangladeshi missions in India had been reinforced. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all diplomatic premises in India,” the ministry stated on Monday.

In the wake of the unrest, three sub-inspectors in Agartala were suspended for lapses in maintaining order around the consulate.

The protests were sparked by the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on sedition charges.

His detention has triggered widespread unrest in Bangladesh, with supporters decrying the charges and calling for his immediate release.

Bangladesh’s concerns about the security of its diplomatic personnel in India underline the tensions surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson for Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed hope that Indian authorities would prevent similar occurrences.

The situation continues to raise questions about diplomatic safety and the underlying tensions fueling the protests.
