Kolkata, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive lead in the West Bengal Assembly elections on Monday, crossing the 200-seat mark in the 294-member House. According to counting trends from the Election Commission of India, the saffron party has surged past the required majority of 148 seats, signaling a fundamental change in the state’s political leadership after more than a decade of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was seeking a fourth consecutive term, faced a significant setback as the TMC trailed across multiple regions. The election, held in two phases on April 23 and 29, was defined by a direct and intense battle between the incumbent government and the BJP. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, a former close confidant of Banerjee, emerged as a central figure in the BJP’s campaign and claimed that the trends reflected a widespread desire for administrative change.

“BJP is forming the government. Early trends show the BJP much ahead of the TMC,” Adhikari stated to reporters during the counting process.

The political landscape appears drastically altered compared to the 2021 results, where the TMC won 215 seats and the BJP served as the opposition with 77. This cycle saw new localized challenges, including a party led by Humayun Kabir, and significant controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. While the TMC leadership advised supporters to wait for final figures, the BJP’s commanding position has already prompted preparations for a transition of power in Kolkata.

“BJP scripts history to dominate Mamata’s TMC,” officials affirmed as the seat count solidified throughout the afternoon.
