Channi Demands Bharat Ratna for Dr. Manmohan Singh

New Delhi/Chandigarh, 28 December 2024: As Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was cremated with state honours at Nigam Bodh Ghat today, with politicians and national figures, including President Droupadi Murmu, paying their tributes among the attendees was Charanjit Singh Channi, former Chief Minister of Punjab and current Jalandhar Lok Sabha member who demanded Bharat Ratna for the deceased.

Speaking to the media at the ceremony, Channi described Dr. Manmohan Singh as a distinguished figure whose contributions to the nation’s progress were invaluable. He also expressed pride in the fact that Singh hailed from Punjab.

Channi demanded that the central government award the Bharat Ratna to Dr. Singh, citing his immense contributions to the country.

Besides, he appealed to Sri Akal Takht Sahib to bestow the title of National Ratna on Dr. Singh.

Regarding a memorial in Dr. Singh’s honour, Channi stressed that politics should not interfere with respecting the former Prime Minister. Drawing a parallel with memorials for leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he called for a dedicated memorial to Dr. Singh to reflect his lasting impact.
