Washington DC, 19 January 2025: Donald Trump is set to take the oath of office as President of the United States on January 20, with key traditions and heightened security measures in place for the inauguration in Washington, D.C.
Approximately 7,800 National Guard soldiers from across states and U.S. territories will be deployed in Washington during the ceremony, with many having already arrived.
Flags will remain at half-mast during the first week of Trump’s administration, aligning with an ongoing tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.
Outgoing President Joe Biden had declared a 30-day national mourning period until January 28.
The Chief Justice of the United States will administer the oath of office during the inauguration.
The process involves the President-elect pledging to uphold the Constitution and faithfully execute the duties of the office, as per tradition.
By custom, all current political appointees and senior officers will step down at noon on January 20. This transition will leave numerous positions vacant across the Defense Department, including roles requiring Senate confirmation.
Meanwhile, acting heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force will oversee operations until permanent appointments are made.
The event underscores both a historic leadership shift and the operational challenges posed by vacancies in key defense roles.
