Chandigarh, December 12, 2024: Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a prominent farmer leader on the 17th day of his fast unto death, has written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging action on farmers’ longstanding demands. Leading the agitation under the United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) since February 13, Dallewal is pushing for 13 demands, including a Minimum Support Price (MSP) Guarantee Act.
In the letter, Dallewal recalled Modi’s 2011 statement, as Gujarat Chief Minister, advocating for legislation to ensure crop purchases above MSP. He criticized the Prime Minister for failing to deliver on his promise after taking office in 2014. Dallewal highlighted instances where commitments, including the Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50% formula, were left unfulfilled despite assurances from the government.
Referring to the historic farmers’ agitation of 2020-21, which lasted 378 days, Dallewal accused the central government of reneging on promises made then, including guaranteeing MSP for all farmers.
Dallewal warned the government of the consequences of inaction, underlining the plight of farmers and holding the central leadership accountable for his deteriorating health and potential consequences of his martyrdom.
He urged Modi to act decisively, either by enacting an MSP law or bearing responsibility for his sacrifice.
