Chandigarh, April 14: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly requested a contract extension that would keep him at the helm through the 2028 T20 World Cup. While Gambhir’s current tenure is slated to conclude following the 2027 ODI World Cup, he is seeking a longer commitment to oversee India’s campaign in both the next short-format world championship and the Los Angeles Olympics.
Central to Gambhir’s vision is the continued leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. Despite the captain leading India to a T20 World Cup title earlier this year, his personal form has become a point of contention for the BCCI and team management. The 35-year-old batter struggled for consistency during the tournament and has had a quiet start to the 2026 IPL season with the Mumbai Indians.
“Obviously, Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that, as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances,” a BCCI source stated. The official affirmed that while Yadav will lead the side during the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, future discussions regarding his role through 2028 will be strictly performance-based.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to scrutinize the captain’s longevity, given he will be 38 by the time the 2028 Olympics arrive. Although Yadav experienced a difficult 2025, he managed a significant turnaround early in 2026 with four half-centuries. However, a string of low scores against major sides in the recent World Cup has raised concerns.
Selectors have noted that the upcoming series in the United Kingdom will be a decisive period for the veteran batter. Results and individual output during these assignments will likely determine if the board agrees to Gambhir’s preference for a long-term leadership plan under Yadav or if a transition becomes necessary before the 2028 cycle.
