CHANDIGARH, Oct 15:  — The Punjab and Haryana High Court will now hear the escalating confrontation between Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police over the custody of Navneet Chaturvedi, accused of forging signatures on Rajya Sabha nomination papers. Both Chaturvedi and the Punjab Police have filed separate petitions before the court.

Chaturvedi, who was being questioned by Chandigarh Police, has alleged that Punjab Police “attempted to abduct” him from a Chandigarh police station. In its petition, the Punjab Police has sought directions restraining Chandigarh authorities from “interfering in the execution of valid arrest warrants” issued against him.

The dispute arose on Tuesday after a heated altercation between officers of the two forces over Chaturvedi’s custody. Punjab Police, acting on a warrant from a Rupnagar court, tried to detain him in connection with an FIR alleging forgery of AAP MLAs’ signatures on Rajya Sabha nomination papers.

However, Chandigarh Police refused to hand him over, citing procedural requirements and later moved him to the Sector 3 Police Station.

The confrontation has since evolved into a legal and jurisdictional battle, with both police forces defending their actions as being in accordance with the law. The High Court is expected to take up the matter for hearing soon.
