CHANDIGARH, Oct 15:— The post-mortem examination of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar began at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here on Wednesday morning, nine days after his alleged suicide at his Sector 11 residence.
A four-member medical board, comprising a convener, two forensic experts, and one histopathologist, is conducting the autopsy, hospital officials confirmed. The officer’s family reached PGI around 8.45 a.m. and completed all formalities before the process began.
According to doctors, histopathological analysis — part of the post-mortem — involves microscopic examination of tissues to help determine the cause of death and identify diseases not visible to the naked eye. “This procedure is vital for establishing medico-legal clarity,” a PGI official noted.
Heavy police deployment was maintained at the institute’s Advanced Anatomy Centre, where the body had been kept since its transfer from the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. Senior officers, including IGP Pushpendra Kumar, SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, Sector 11 SHO Jaiveer Rana, and PGI Police Post in-charge Babita, personally supervised security arrangements.
The body’s transfer had earlier been delayed due to a standoff between the police and the family, which had initially resisted the move. Officials said the post-mortem is being conducted strictly under court supervision and “all legal protocols are being meticulously followed.”
The 2009-batch IPS officer was found dead with a gunshot wound on October 7. His death triggered protests and political reactions across Haryana, with his family accusing senior police officers — DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya — of harassment and bias. They have demanded both be arrested and suspended.
Following mounting outrage, the Haryana government initiated administrative changes. SP Bijarniya was sent on leave on October 11, and DGP Kapur was directed to proceed on leave two days later. Surinder Bhoria has since been appointed as Rohtak SP, while Om Prakash Singh, Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, was given additional charge as DGP.
The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chandigarh Police in coordination with Haryana authorities. Officials said Wednesday’s post-mortem is a crucial step expected to yield key forensic details that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
