LGBTQIA+ Inclusivity, Rights Discussed at Chandigarh Roundtable

Chandigarh, 9 January 2025: Chandigarh hosted a roundtable conference focusing on strategies to enhance inclusivity and uphold the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Titled “Advocacy, Rights, and Reforms with the LGBTQIA+ Community for an Inclusive World,” the event was supported by the British Deputy High Commission, Chandigarh, and facilitated by Rubaroo, a Hyderabad-based NGO.

The gathering included government representatives, legal professionals, social activists, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Caroline Rowett, deputy high commissioner at the British Deputy High Commission, reiterated the UK’s commitment to creating inclusive societies where safety, respect, and equal opportunities are accessible to all. “Societies thrive when everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels valued and protected,” she said.

Special guests included Shipra Bansal, chairperson of the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and Rakesh Popli, PCS officer. They joined LGBTQIA+ rights advocates and scholars in discussions aimed at collective action to build an equitable world.

The conference fostered dialogue among diverse stakeholders to address systemic barriers and promote reforms essential for advancing LGBTQIA+ rights.
