Chandigarh, 31 January 2025: Retired IAS officer Mahavir Singh has been appointed chief commissioner of the Chandigarh Right to Service (RTS) Commission. Singh, a 1989-batch Haryana-cadre officer, takes over a position that had been vacant since December 12, 2023, following the departure of Arun Kumar.
Kumar, also a 1989-batch Haryana-cadre IAS officer, stepped down after being named chairman of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Gurugram branch. He had served as chief commissioner for just two months.
Singh’s appointment, confirmed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, comes nearly a year after the post was left vacant on March 21, 2023, following the retirement of KK Jindal. Before Kumar’s brief tenure in October 2023, former UT Adviser Dharam Pal had held interim charge until his retirement on October 31, 2023.
Singh’s last posting before retirement on February 28, 2023, was as additional chief secretary for school education, sports, and youth affairs in Haryana. His oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for February 5 at Punjab Raj Bhawan.
The Chandigarh RTS Commission operates under the Punjab Right to Service Act, 2011, and its 2014 amendment, which were extended to the Union Territory on August 14, 2017. The Act mandates time-bound delivery of public services while aiming to curb corruption and enhance transparency and accountability in government offices.
