Chandigarh, April 23: The Chandigarh administration released approximately 10,000 fish seeds into Sukhna Lake on Tuesday as part of a concerted effort to fortify the local aquatic environment. This initiative, led by the UT Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, focused on introducing indigenous carp species to stabilize the food chain before the arrival of winter migratory birds.

Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Pardeep Kumar, stated that the project illustrates a commitment to viewing the lake as a vital living system rather than a simple tourist destination. Kumar affirmed that maintaining aquatic biodiversity remains essential for the enduring health of the water body.

Experts from Panjab University provided guidance for the release, recommending a focus on native varieties such as rohu, catla, and mrigal. These species are considered naturally suited to the specific conditions of the lake. Director of Fisheries, Naveen, maintained that consistent stocking efforts are necessary because natural breeding cycles cannot fully meet the biological requirements of the lake at this time.

To ensure the new seeds integrated effectively, officials distributed the fish across various sections of the water. Joint Director Ashwani Kumar declared that releasing the fish at multiple points facilitates an even distribution. He also noted that while conservation is the priority, the administration continues to permit regulated angling at specific locations to maintain a balance with public recreation.

The timing of the release aligns with preparations for World Fish Migration Day on May 23. Officials asserted that these ecological interventions are mandatory to protect the landmark from mounting environmental pressures while ensuring it remains a viable habitat for visiting avian species.
