NOIDA, July 15 — A major fire in a multi-storey residential building in Sector 66 resulted in the deaths of two individuals on Wednesday after a charging electric vehicle caught fire on the premises. Emergency services launched a massive rescue operation to evacuate dozens of tenants trapped inside the ground-plus-four-storey structure. Following preliminary safety assessments, local police officials placed the building’s landlord under arrest on charges of structural negligence.
The rescue operation involved multiple fire tenders and a specialized hydraulic platform to safely remove approximately 50 trapped residents from the upper floors. While the vast majority of the building’s inhabitants were evacuated safely, medical personnel confirmed that two individuals succumbed to the effects of the disaster. Both victims had existing health complications and passed away due to severe smoke inhalation after being rushed via ambulance to the district hospital.
Local law enforcement officials confirmed that the fire originated in the parking area before engulfing the rest of the structure. Joint Commissioner of Police Rajiv Mishra stated that initial investigations indicate the blaze was triggered by an electric two-wheeler that was being charged on the premises. He maintained that the fire quickly intensified after spreading to nearby petrol-powered scooters and motorcycles parked inside the building.
The incident has prompted a broader investigation into structural safety compliance and potential zoning violations within the residential cluster. A senior administrative official affirmed that teams are checking whether proper fire safety installations were available on the property. The central police team is currently compiling testimonies from the surviving tenants to establish a complete timeline of the event and evaluate the charging infrastructure setup.
