Sangrur, May 19: The Punjab government has initiated a localized infrastructure modernization project designed to systematically transition rural electrical lines from overhead poles to underground channels.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann commenced the engineering project on Tuesday by laying the formal foundation stone in Satauj village, located within the Sangrur district. The pilot initiative represents the initial phase of a broader state-level development strategy to establish pole-free rural zones across the agricultural plains.
State engineering coordinates indicate that the shifting of high-voltage transmission wires beneath the surface is primarily intended to mitigate frequent agricultural hazards, including accidental field fires during harvest seasons and fatal contact injuries involving heavy farming equipment.
The public works department noted that removing the aging overhead grid networks will also improve the consistency of rural power distribution by shielding the lines from seasonal storm damage.
“The Bhagwant Mann government has begun shifting electricity wires underground to prevent crop fires, fatal accidents and frequent power disruptions,” a state spokesperson noted during the launch ceremony.
The pilot setup in Sangrur will serve as the primary operational blueprint for future rural utility updates across other agricultural blocks. Administrative monitors stated that regional power corporations have been instructed to chart matching local blueprints to gradually extend the underground grid format to adjacent districts.
