US Military Plane Deports Migrants to India

Washington/New Delhi, 4 February 2025: A US military aircraft carrying migrants to India has departed, marking the longest deportation flight under the Trump administration’s use of military transport for immigration enforcement, a US official said Monday.

The C-17 aircraft left with migrants on board but was not expected to reach India for at least 24 hours, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

This flight expands the administration’s reliance on military resources for deportations, a practice that has already included flights to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras.

President Donald Trump has increasingly involved the military in his immigration policies, deploying additional troops to the US-Mexico border, repurposing military bases to house migrants, and utilizing military aircraft for deportations.

The Pentagon has also begun flights to remove more than 5,000 immigrants held in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California.

However, these flights come at a high cost. Reuters reported that a recent deportation flight to Guatemala likely cost at least $4,675 per migrant.
