LUCKNOW, July 15 — A modern fisheries enterprise spanning over 10 hectares in Raebareli is transforming local aquaculture and creating sustainable employment opportunities for rural youth through targeted state-supported self-employment schemes. Led by a US-returned software engineer, the venture has emerged as a prominent model of rural entrepreneurship supported under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
Sujit Chaudhary, the founder of the enterprise, declared that his project now produces approximately 500 to 600 tonnes of fish annually across 23 ponds located in Balla village of Raebareli’s Maharajganj area. Chaudhary, who completed his B.Tech in 2005 and worked in the United States for nearly nine years before returning to India, transitioned to rural agribusiness during the pandemic. By securing land on lease and integrating modern technical management, he has successfully expanded commercial fish production and integrated marine shrimp cultivation.
“We are working to bypass intermediaries and connect directly with our consumer base, which significantly improves the economic return for local farmers,” Chaudhary asserted. He affirmed that more than 50 local farmers have collaborated with his venture, leading to a collective increase in household incomes and establishing a stable, cooperative employment model in the region.
The project’s expansion was facilitated in part by an administrative grant of Rs 8.50 lakh provided in 2021 under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Building on this momentum, Chaudhary maintained that plans are now underway to establish a dedicated Fish Hub in the district. The proposed facility is designed to feature a specialized testing laboratory and a training center to equip local youth with advanced technical skills in aquaculture, fostering further self-employment.
State administrative representatives stated that supportive policy frameworks in agriculture, dairy, and food processing are consistently enabling young professionals to establish high-yield ventures in rural sectors. The success of large-scale initiatives like the Raebareli fish farm demonstrates how modern management practices combined with institutional support can effectively revitalize local economies.
