Uttar Pradesh introduces advanced hydrogen fuel cell buses

State opts for Future of Green Transit

Lucknow, June 13: The Uttar Pradesh government has expanded its clean energy initiative by introducing hydrogen-powered buses to its public transport network. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off three hydrogen vehicles alongside a new fleet of electric buses within the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority area. Developed under the Green Hydrogen-Based Mobility Project by NTPC Dadri, the initiative represents a strategic shift toward sustainable, zero-emission transit solutions.

A key feature of the project is its reliance on treated water from a local Sewage Treatment Plant, ensuring the manufacturing process preserves natural water resources. The state administration affirmed that the initiative yields significant ecological benefits, noting that the operations will generate an estimated 2,080 kilograms of oxygen daily, an impact comparable to planting 1,750 trees. Furthermore, the transition is projected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1,000 tonnes annually.

Unlike conventional petrol or diesel vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell systems offer a completely clean alternative for regional transit. Officials declared that the buses emit only water vapor, successfully eliminating standard air pollution concerns. This aligns regional infrastructure with global transportation trends, where developed nations are increasingly prioritizing hydrogen-based technology.

The newly deployed vehicles are fully equipped for long-range regional travel. Each bus accommodates 42 passengers and holds a capacity of 56 kilograms of hydrogen per fill. This allows the fleet to maintain a substantial operating range of approximately 750 kilometers before requiring refueling, establishing a practical model for future green energy infrastructure.
