New Delhi, Jan 11: The social media giant ‘X’ has admitted to failures in its content moderation system following a stern warning from India’s IT Ministry regarding obscene content generated by its AI tool, Grok.
In a swift cleanup operation, the platform deleted over 600 accounts and blocked 3,500 pieces of content. Government sources confirmed that X has now pledged to operate in total compliance with Indian laws, specifically vowing to ban obscene imagery from the service. The move comes after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a notice on January 2 highlighting serious lapses in the platform’s statutory due diligence.
“The ministry described such content as a grave violation of dignity, privacy, and digital safety,” sources noted, referencing the explicit material targeting women and children produced by the Grok AI tool.
MeitY has demanded a full technical review of Grok’s architecture to prevent future misuse. X is currently under a 72-hour deadline to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report, with the government warning of “strict legal consequences” for the platform and its officers if they fail to uphold national cyber and child protection laws.
