Jalandhar, April 21: Jalandhar police secured an eight-day extension of police remand for Saidul Ameen, the key accused in the April 7 grenade attack at the residence of former minister and BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia.
Ameen, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was produced before a local court by the Jalandhar commissionerate police. Assistant Commissioner of Police Aarish Bhatia told reporters, “We had sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted eight days. Certain fresh leads have emerged during the interrogation, and further investigation is ongoing.”
The accused was initially arrested on April 12 in a joint operation by Punjab Police, Delhi Police, and central agencies. He was earlier remanded to police custody for seven days. Two other suspects in the case — Satish and Harry — were remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
The attack occurred at Kalia’s Jalandhar residence when a hand grenade was lobbed, shattering windows and damaging vehicles. No injuries were reported.
Investigators have linked the attack to a broader plot allegedly masterminded by Zeeshan Akhtar — an associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti, who is believed to be backed by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Police also said Babbar Khalsa International’s involvement is under scrutiny.
Another angle under investigation includes the role of Abhijot, a Haryana-based accused who was arrested on April 11 in Kurukshetra after an exchange of fire. According to police, he was part of the financial chain facilitating the attack’s execution.
In a separate but connected development, Army jawan Sukhcharan Singh (30), who was arrested on April 15, has been remanded to three more days of police custody. He is accused of providing online grenade training to the man who lobbed a grenade at YouTuber Rozer Sandhu’s house on March 16.
Police said Singh’s name surfaced during the interrogation of Hardik Kamboj, the primary accused in the attack on Sandhu. Though the grenade did not explode and no injuries or property damage occurred, nine arrests have been made so far in the case.
Singh, a resident of Muktsar and a soldier with the 3rd Sikh Light Infantry stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, has now been formally named in the case.
