Chandigarh, October 11 —  Sify Infinit has announced an investment of ₹611 crore to set up a data center in the state with the upcoming facility serving as a secure storage and processing hub for digital data, supporting a range of online services — from financial transactions to cloud computing and artificial intelligence applications. Officials said it would also benefit start-ups, government departments, and private enterprises by providing faster and more reliable data solutions.

According to officials, the project is expected to strengthen the state’s presence in India’s growing information technology sector and create large-scale employment for skilled professionals.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann described the investment as a “milestone” for Punjab’s transition from an agriculture-based to a technology-driven economy. “This is a big step toward making Punjab a hub for digital services,” Mann said, adding that the government’s focus on transparent governance and ease of doing business has encouraged companies to invest.

According to government estimates, the project will generate employment opportunities for engineers, IT professionals, and support staff. “This is a strong signal that Punjab is ready to become not just a food producer, but an information provider,” a senior government official said.

Sify Infinit, a subsidiary of the Chennai-based Sify Technologies, is one of India’s leading data center and digital infrastructure providers. Its Punjab investment adds to a growing list of companies setting up advanced technology facilities outside traditional IT hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Gurugram.

The Mann government has been seeking to attract private investment in information technology, renewable energy, and manufacturing as part of its economic diversification plan. Officials said policy reforms and simplified clearance systems have improved investor confidence.

Industry observers noted that with increasing reliance on data-driven services, the demand for regional data centers has surged. The new facility, they said, could position Punjab as a key player in the country’s digital network.

“The data center will bring jobs, faster connectivity, and modern digital infrastructure to the state,” said an official from the IT Department. “It marks the beginning of Punjab’s integration into India’s digital economy.”
