Kapurthala, October 29: A civilian employee posted as a Safai Sewak at the Kapurthala Army Cantonment has been arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan and transmitting sensitive information about military areas, police said on Tuesday.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a team led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, IPS, apprehended the accused near Y-Point, Kanjali, during a patrol and checking operation. The accused, identified as Raja, a resident of Mushakved in Kapurthala district, was employed on contract as a sanitary worker inside the cantonment premises.

SSP Toora said preliminary investigations revealed that Raja had been in communication with individuals in Pakistan and was allegedly forwarding photographs of restricted Army zones and information linked to military establishments. “During the search, we recovered his mobile phone, which contained evidence suggesting contact with Pakistani handlers,” Toora noted.

Investigating officers claimed that Raja had also been receiving money from his handlers in return for the data he supplied. The SSP termed it a “grave breach of national security,” adding that the information shared could potentially endanger the integrity and operational confidentiality of defence installations.

Following the discovery, an FIR was registered under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Kotwali, Kapurthala. Raja was taken into custody, and officials said further investigation is underway to assess the extent of the leak and identify possible accomplices.
