PHAGWARA, Nov. 20 — The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) on Thursday took cognisance of a disturbing incident in which an unclaimed body was transported from Phagwara Civil Hospital to a cremation ground in a municipal garbage collection vehicle.

The incident came to light after mediapersons recorded a video showing the body being dumped into the vehicle at Phagwara railway station, which quickly went viral on social media. PSHRC Chairperson Justice Sant Parkash and member Justice Gurbir Singh have called for a detailed report from Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora and Phagwara Municipal Corporation Commissioner Akshita Gupta. The report is expected a week before the next hearing on January 27, 2026.

“The lack of concern for human dignity is evident, especially as the vehicle driver stated that transporting unclaimed bodies this way was routine,” the PSHRC said. The commission has also informed the state Special DGP for Human Rights in Chandigarh to ensure compliance.

Phagwara municipal officials initially claimed ignorance when contacted. However, Mayor Rampal Uppal assured strict action and ordered an inquiry to determine responsibility. “We will take strict measures against those found responsible,” he said.

MC Commissioner Akshita Gupta described the incident as “serious” and confirmed that a formal inquiry has been initiated. “Stringent action will be taken against those responsible,” she added.
