Snowfall returns to Rohtang Pass, triggers travel curbs

Rohtang, Dec 9: Rohtang Pass received a fresh spell of snowfall on Monday, ending weeks of dry and unusually warm weather across Himachal Pradesh and prompting authorities to impose restrictions on tourist movement.

Snowfall began intensifying by midday across Rohtang, Baralacha La and Shinku La as a new western disturbance swept the region. Dense cloud cover hung low over the Manali and Lahaul–Spiti valleys through the morning, signalling a clear shift toward early winter conditions. The return of snow brought relief to locals and tourists who had watched the high mountains remain bare since early winter.

The Lahaul–Spiti district administration said more snowfall is likely in the coming days, which could give an early boost to the winter tourism season. But the sudden weather turnaround also forced tighter traffic controls. Many visitors heading toward Rohtang Pass were stopped at Marhi after roads turned slippery and visibility dropped sharply. Tourists were redirected toward Koksar, where snow could be viewed safely.

Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana confirmed that the Manali–Leh highway has been officially closed for the winter. “The road beyond Darcha is unsafe. We strongly advise people not to travel toward Baralacha La,” she said.

Shinku La remains temporarily open but only for four-wheel-drive vehicles. About a dozen such vehicles crossed into Zanskar on Monday morning, though officials said the route is being closely monitored as snowfall increases.

The Kullu district administration announced that Rohtang Pass will remain open to tourists until December 10, depending on weather conditions. Manali SDM Raman Kumar Sharma said only 4×4 vehicles are being allowed due to slippery stretches. He added that while the rule has reduced traffic on the summit climb, tourist enthusiasm remains high.

With fresh snow draping Rohtang, Himachal Pradesh’s winter charm has returned—offering stunning views while underscoring the need for caution in the high mountains.
