HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Dec 28 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of having no interest in peace after a massive Russian aerial assault on Kyiv killed at least two people and injured several others.
“We want peace,” Zelensky said. “And he’s a man of war.”
Zelensky made the comments while speaking in Halifax alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, a day before his scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida. The Ukrainian leader is expected to present a 20-point peace proposal aimed at ending the nearly four-year conflict.
The remarks came hours after Russia carried out one of its largest air attacks on Ukraine’s capital and surrounding regions. Zelensky said Russian forces launched more than 500 drones and over 40 missiles in an assault that lasted more than 10 hours.
According to CNN, the strikes caused widespread power outages across Kyiv, disrupting daily life for hours.
During his stop in Canada, Zelensky met with Carney as well as leaders from NATO and the European Union. He urged allies to maintain firm positions both militarily and diplomatically to prevent Moscow from prolonging the war.
“Strong positions are needed both at the front and in diplomacy to prevent Putin from manipulating and evading a real and just end to the war,” Zelensky said later in a post on X. “The world has sufficient strength to guarantee security and peace.”
Zelensky is expected to meet Trump on Sunday in Florida. Trump has previously said that any peace plan would require his approval.
