Chandigarh, Jan 2: A Sikh taxi driver in Canada’s Calgary city helped deliver a baby girl inside his cab during a severe winter storm, turning an urgent hospital trip into an unexpected emergency.
Hardeep Singh Toor said he was dispatched late Saturday night for what he believed was a routine urgent pickup. However, when he reached the location, he realised the woman passenger was already in active labour.
“I understood immediately that this was serious and we had to reach the hospital as fast as possible,” Toor said.
Temperatures in Calgary had dropped to nearly minus 23 degrees Celsius, with icy roads and stormy conditions making the drive difficult. Toor drove toward the Peter Lougheed Centre, a journey that usually takes about 30 minutes.
Just a few blocks before reaching the hospital, the woman delivered the baby in the back seat of the taxi.
“When I heard the baby cry, I felt a huge sense of relief,” Toor said. “That moment told me everything was okay.”
Upon arrival at the hospital, Toor alerted medical staff, who immediately took over the care of the mother and newborn. The baby was later confirmed to be a healthy girl.
The baby’s father thanked Toor for remaining calm and helping them during the emergency, according to Canadian media reports.
