Jalandhar, Jan 9:Jalandhar Police have registered an FIR after a forensic examination concluded that a viral video clip accusing Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena of making derogatory remarks about Sikh Gurus was manipulated.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate said the forensic report found that Atishi never used the word “gurus” in the original recording. “The video was deliberately edited and circulated with inflammatory captions to falsely attribute words that were not spoken,” the police said.
The complaint was lodged by Iqbal Singh, following which a case was registered against unknown persons in the Cyber Cell. A senior police officer said the probe was carried out using scientific methods.
Police said the audio-video clip was downloaded from the social media account of Delhi minister Kapil Mishra and sent to the Director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Punjab, at SAS Nagar for detailed examination. Mishra has not been named as an accused in the FIR.
The row began after a clipped video from a Delhi Assembly discussion on pollution went viral, allegedly showing Atishi making disrespectful comments about Sikh Gurus. Atishi rejected the allegation, stating that the clip had been edited to distort her remarks.
Following the controversy, the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee filed police complaints, claiming the video hurt Sikh religious sentiments, particularly in relation to Guru Tegh Bahadur.
After the FIR was registered, AAP accused the BJP, Akali Dal and the Congress of politicising the issue. “They dragged the revered Gurus into political disputes and hurt Sikh sentiments,” the party said.
Separately, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has ordered a forensic inquiry into the clip and referred the matter to the Assembly’s Committee of Privileges. The Haryana Gurdwara Management Committee has also moved the Akal Takht, seeking action in connection with the controversy.
