Srinagar, May 4: Heavy rain in the plains and fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of the Kashmir Valley led authorities to shut down the Mughal Road on Monday. The closure was implemented as a safety measure after accumulating snow at Peer Ki Gali created hazardous, slippery conditions for motorists.
The unseasonal weather pattern brought a dusting of snow to high-altitude areas, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and the Zabarwan Range. Meanwhile, Srinagar and other low-lying regions experienced persistent rainfall, causing a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures. The Mughal Road, which serves as a critical alternate link between the Shopian district and the Rajouri-Poonch region, remains inaccessible until the route is cleared.
“Traffic movement has been stopped on Mughal Road due to fresh snowfall in upper reaches and slippery conditions,” stated Manzoor Ahmad Kohli, District Traffic Inspector for Poonch.
Traffic officials affirmed that the situation is under constant surveillance, and the road will only be reopened once the weather stabilizes. Maintenance crews are on standby to begin clearing operations as soon as the snowfall subsides. Commuters have been advised to check for official status updates before attempting to travel through the mountain passes.
“People are advised to avoid travel until the road becomes passable,” Kohli declared to ensure public safety during the inclement weather.
