Voting window locked for mid-June across upper houses and council tiers

NEW DELHI, JUNE 1—The Election Commission of India on Monday issued the formal schedule for upcoming legislative contests to fill 27 vacancies across the Rajya Sabha and upper houses in three states. According to an official statement from the poll panel, all voting is scheduled to take place on June 18, with the nomination process starting immediately.

The extensive multi-state process includes 24 biennial upper house seats distributed across 10 distinct states, alongside localized bye-elections required in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. Additionally, the legislative councils of Bihar and Karnataka will see vacancies filled through both biennial and bye-election cycles.

Authorities confirmed that polling booths will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the designated Tuesday, followed by immediate counting.

“The counting of votes will be held from 5pm onwards on the same day,” the ECI statement noted regarding the swift tabulation process.

Aspiring candidates have until 3 p.m. on June 8 to submit their nomination papers to designated returning officers. Following a thorough scrutiny phase on June 9, candidates maintaining an interest in the race will have until June 11 to formally withdraw their candidatures before the final ballots are cast.
