Kohima, July 14: A suspected improvised explosive device blast killed one Assam Rifles soldier and injured four others on Monday near Sukhovi in Nagaland. The attack occurred while the convoy was traversing the area, with the force of the explosion directly hitting the personnel inside one of the vehicles.

“The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to the nearest medical facility for treatment,” a senior security official stated, adding that the entire area was quickly cordoned off to ensure safety.

This incident marks the second major strike against the paramilitary force in the region within a single week. Security forces have since initiated a massive search and area domination operation across the sector to track down the perpetrators. Teams are currently analyzing the blast site to establish the exact sequence of events and identify the nature of the explosive.

The latest ambush follows a deadly attack on July 6 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, where two personnel from the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles, Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Rifleman C.M. Singh, lost their lives. Authorities affirmed that those soldiers succumbed to their injuries despite receiving immediate medical attention after a prolonged gunfight.

Assam Rifles, which operates as India’s oldest paramilitary force, continues to face persistent threats while managing security in these border regions. In response to the rising friction, defense agencies have stepped up surveillance and anti-insurgency operations across vulnerable pockets of the Northeast to prevent subsequent ambushes.
