CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Administration’s Estate Department notified the Union Territory of Chandigarh Tenancy Rules, 2026, operationalising the Assam Tenancy Act, 2021, as extended to the region. The newly introduced framework aims to bring higher transparency, digital efficiency, and structured accountability to rental management across the Union Territory. Under the provisions, landlords and tenants must intimate tenancy agreement details online to the Rent Authority within two months of execution, following which a Unique Identification Number will be issued as an e-receipt within seven days.
The rules outline a digital platform supporting vernacular languages, secured by OTP verification, while maintaining data privacy safeguards for tenancy records. A three-tier dispute resolution mechanism comprising the Rent Authority, Rent Court, and Rent Tribunal has been set up to process matters within defined timelines, including fixed timeframes for appeals and order executions. Estate Officer Nishant Kumar Yadav stated that the new rules will bring greater ease, transparency, and predictability to landlord-tenant relations across Chandigarh.
