Mumbai, 18 January 2025: Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev joined Kangana Ranaut at a special screening of her political drama Emergency on Friday, praising the film for its historical relevance and impact.
The film, directed by Kangana, revisits the 1975 Emergency period under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a chapter marked by political unrest and sweeping governmental authority. Released on January 17, 2025, it highlights one of India’s most debated episodes.
Reflecting on the movie, Sadhguru called it essential viewing for younger generations. “The youth must watch this film to understand history,” he said. He further described Emergency as “a very complex subject, but fantastically presented,” commending the director for capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in just two-and-a-half hours.
Drawing from his own experiences during the Emergency, Sadhguru, then a university student, recounted its far-reaching influence. “It was a big event with a huge impact. Today’s youth might not read about it, but films like this offer an accessible way to understand history,” he noted.
He urged viewers not to judge the past but to learn from it. “There is no need to debate whether it was right or wrong. The real question is whether we, as a nation, learn from these events or keep repeating our mistakes,” he said.
The spiritual leader also applauded the actors’ performances, particularly Kangana and Anupam Kher, for convincingly portraying historical figures.
“Playing historical roles is challenging. It requires a level of performance beyond personal acting styles, and they did a wonderful job,” he observed.
Kangana, who plays Indira Gandhi in the film, expressed gratitude for Sadhguru’s presence. “We are blessed that Sadhguru ji made time for this screening. His blessings mean so much to us,” she said.
Alongside Kangana, the film features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik in key roles, delving into the political and societal turbulence of the era.
Emergency stands as a stark reminder of the enduring lessons of history for generations to come.
