Kolkata, 18 January 2025: Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer, was convicted on Saturday for the rape and murder of a junior doctor whose body was discovered at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The sentence will be pronounced by a Kolkata court on Monday.

The crime triggered nationwide outrage and weeks-long protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim and improved security at public hospitals.

During the in-camera trial, which began on November 12, 50 witnesses were examined, and proceedings concluded on January 9. Throughout the trial, Roy maintained his innocence, stating in November, “I am completely innocent and being framed.”

The victim’s parents have consistently alleged the involvement of others in the crime and recently filed an application seeking further investigation. They expressed hope for additional arrests and trials.

The brutal incident and subsequent protests underscored the need for stronger security measures at state-run medical institutions across the country.
